Incy Wincy - Review of a New Adventure

A Fun-Filled Story for Small Children at Home, Playgroup or School

Incy Wincy Spider, published by Little Tiger Press, is an entertaining book utilizing the familiar spider character, and giving him a whole new rhyming adventure.

The combination of author, Keith Chapman, and illustrator, Jack Tickle, has worked some superb magic on an age-old nursery rhyme character and created a hugely entertaining new adventure for Incy Wincy Spider, while introducing the young reader to other beautifully drawn, colourful animal characters.

A Story in Rhyme

Young Incy Wincy Spider is happily spinning webs in a barn when the wind blows him outside. Then begins his long journey, as he is tossed from one animal to another. He lands on a pig, goat, cow, duck, horse and cockerel, who each in turn send him off to the next.

The cockerel cannot find Incy Wincy, although it knows that he shot out his web to stick to the cockerel’s head. We find him, finally, bouncing onto his mummy’s web. Back home, he can now safely go to bed.

The story itself is written in rhyme, following the same pattern as the traditional Incy Wincy Spider nursery rhyme. Children are introduced to a vast array of words related to movement, to which actions could easily be added. Keith Chapman has ensured, too, that there is a happy, secure ending for the small child reader, as Incy Wincy returns to his mummy.

Interactive and Non-Threatening

This is an extremely non-threatening book for children, dealing with a creature many people fear – the spider. The illustrations, not only of the spider but of all the animals, are cartoon-like, and each has its own cute, comic personality which comes to life in the illustrations, even down to the small observers such as the passing insects and the fish. Incy Wincy even has a rather sweet, innocent little face (for a spider!).

Much is made of the web in the book’s design, although the story does not particularly emphasise the web thread until the end. The thread of web Incy Wincy spins, as he goes on his adventure, is embossed and glittered and takes the small readers on a glittery, tactile journey from Incy Wincy’s barn, through his entire adventure, and back to the comfort of his home.

A Book to Share

This colourful book is 24x26cm and made of relatively robust thin card pages, and has a card cover. It is definitely a book to be shared and read aloud, and could be used to encourage children to invent their own adventures for Incy Wincy Spider, or as a starting point for doing this with other nursery rhyme characters. The pink front cover may put off boys at first glance, but it is definitely worth encouraging them to share this entertaining rhyming story. It would certainly be a hit in playgroups, nurseries and pre-schools everywhere.
