Diary of a Worm, Joanna Cotler Books

What's it like being a kid worm? Well, first off your face looks just like your butt.

Next off, you must never bother your dad when he’s eating the morning newspaper. Also, never forget to bring your lunch to school or you’ll end up eating your own homework.

But life as a worm isn’t all about which end is which and eating. A sidewalk game of hopscotch, a favorite game for human children, is enough to give a little worm nightmares. Fishing season is also pretty terrifying.

Imagine going to the school dance and the only part of the hokey pokey you can do is put your head in, put your head out.

Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin (Joanna Cotler Books, ISBN-10: 006000150X) is a bizarre and hilariously funny picture book for kids that adults will love reading. The humor is twisted and the illustrations by Harry Bliss are a laugh.

Diary of a Worm is also an excellent way to introduce children to diary writing as well as creative writing: what would an elephant’s diary be like? An anteater? A goldfish? Small children can be encouraged to make three simple entries into an animal’s diary and illustrate each entry.

I really enjoyed reading Diary of a Worm, and I can’t wait to share this book with the other children and parents in my family. It’s sure to be a hit among children.
