Get your toddler excited for Christmas with this charming picture book by Tina Burke.

Children love the Christmas season. It is the one time of the year they get to decorate the house in bright, gaudy colors, throw tinsel on the Yule tree, bake delicious cookies, and eat a lot of candy. And let’s not forget old Santa Claus who comes down the chimney delivering Christmas presents. Christmas would not be the same without Old Jolly.

As parents, we create the magic of Christmas for our children. When they are toddlers, we teach them how to make paper rings to hang on the walls, mix a batch of cookies and taste test the cookie dough, and we teach them to sing simple Christmas carols. We also read stacks of Christmas books to our children. There are the Santa Claus stories, the reindeer stories, and the famous poem Twas the Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moore.

It’s Christmas by Tina Burke (Kane/Miller Book Publishers, ISBN 978-1-933605-44-9) is the latest Christmas picture book on the shelves. Written and illustrated specifically for small children, It’s Christmas catches all the fun of this winter celebration. For example, the illustrations show a small child decorating the refrigerator with a picture of a Christmas tree, a little boy sampling some yummy cookie dough, and a little girl stringing popcorn. There is also the visit to Santa and the traditional photograph of a smiling toddler and a crying infant on Santa’s lap. There is caroling and decorating the Christmas tree. When it comes to presents, it is always best to make your own.

After the decorations and the present making, there is the excruciatingly long wait for Santa to arrive. Stockings are hung. Cookies and a glass of milk are left out for Old Saint Nick. Will he come? How long will it take? The wait seems endless for small children, but that is all part of the magic.

Tina Burke has done a wonderful job catching the excitement and the magic of Christmas. The illustrations are vibrant and full of action. Reading It’s Christmas is a great way to get young children motivated to take part in making the magic that is Christmas. Each page pictures an activity you and your child can do together, from baking cookies to decorating the Christmas tree. For such a simple toddler’s picture book, the ideas and excitement that come from it are endless.
