Stanley at Sea by Linda Bailey (Kids Can Press, ISBN: 978-1-55453-193) is a funny adventure featuring four overly hungry dogs who find themselves in a bit of trouble when their search for food turns into the trip of a lifetime. Written for ages 3 to 7, Stanley at Sea is a story that parents, as well as teachers, will love to read out to their little ones, over and over again.
The story begins with a dog named Stanley. He’s begging for food at the picnic table. “Get!” say his people, so Stanley wanders down to the river and meets his three friends: Nutsy, Alice, and Gassy Jack.
All four dogs are hungry and drooling so they go off in search of something to eat. First they find a dumpster overflowing with scraps of food, but before they can dig in for a feast, a garbage truck comes along and empties out the bin. Next they find a ham sandwich on a small rowboat. The climb onto the boat and Gassy Jack gobbles the sandwich down.
Determined to search for more food, the four dogs turn to step off the rowboat only to find that the boat is moving down the river. Unsure what to do, Stanley and his friends watch as they pass by houses, travel under a bridge, and get swept out to sea.
Where are the four friends going? Stanley announces that they must be going to the end of outside, because every dog knows that the outside only goes as far as a great big fence. Sure enough, as the dogs travel on their little boat, they eventually hit something large. It is like a tall wall and, the dogs believe, must be the fence that surrounds the great outside.
Men come down from the giant fence and rescue the dogs, one by one. Aboard a large boat, the dogs are fed all the food they can eat. Then, being so full that they can barely walk, the dogs are returned to their homes, and, to this day, dogs everywhere still talk about the fence that surrounds the great outside and all the wonderful food that they can eat if they reach the fence.
Children, as well as adults, love stories involving animals. Stanley at Sea is a wonderful picture book that will make children chuckle and it will easily become a favorite bedtime story.
