Meet two dog detectives in this great story for young readers.

Meet Lu and Clancy, two dog detectives who always manage to stumble into a new puzzle to solve. This time, in The Drop of Doom, Lu and Clancy are taking cousin Jake to the carnival.

Both Lu and Clancy can’t wait to ride the Drop of Doom, but cousin Jake is not interested. In fact, Jake is terrified of carnival rides, especially the Drop of Doom.

Jake manages to stall Lu and Clancy from rushing to their favorite ride by taking them into the magic tent. Jake loves magic tricks.

However, while the three doggies were in the magic tent, Clancy overhears two dogs lay out a plot to steal money and jewelry from the carnival goers. After telling the plot to Lu, Lu and Clancy are as determined as ever to get to the Drop of Doom ride and stop of thieves from carrying out their wicked plans.

Jake, being terrified of the ride, had other ideas. First Jake took Lu and Clancy to the Hall of Mirrors. Then he took them to a dance lesson, the House of Horrors, and the Pirate Hall.

Enough is enough. Lu and Clancy were fed up with Jake trying to stall them from going to the Drop of Doom and catching the thieves. Just then, Lu had an idea. She handed Jake a playing card and a pair of scissors. She told Jake that if he could cut a hole large enough to walk through in the card, they would not go to the Drop of Doom.

Try as he might, Jake could not cut a hole larger than his nose. Lu got another playing card and, a few snips later, she cut a hole in the card that was large enough for her to walk through. Jake was going with them to the Drop of Doom.

Off they went, to the carnival rides. When they reached the Drop of Doom, Lu and Clancy split up to look for the thieving dogs while Jake went to look for the help of a police officer.

Will Lu and Clancy catch the thieves? Will they ever get to ride their favorite carnival ride? Will Jake return with help?

The Drop of Doom by Adrienne Mason (Kids Can Press, ISBN-10: 1-55453-035-0) is a thrilling story for young readers who still need a little bit of help with words (Level 2 – Kids Can Read with Help). The characters are lovable and the illustrations go a long way to help beginning readers understand what is happening in the story and what words are being used.

What is especially charming about the Lu and Clancy books is that at the end of each story there’s a magic trick. In The Drop of Doom, children learn how to cut a piece of paper so that it opens up to a hole that is large enough to walk through. It’s a great trick that kids will love to show their family and friends.
